Recycle for Scotland provides advice and information on how to recycle, helping to protect Scotland’s natural environment and make our communities nicer places to live in.
Putting out recyclable items only takes a little time, but makes a massive difference. And after it’s collected, it doesn’t disappear. It’s broken down into raw materials, which can come back as new items.
By increasing our efforts at home and recycling on the go, we can help Scotland move towards becoming a zero waste society.
Why should I recycle?
Recycling protects our environment.
Creating new products from recycled materials conserves important raw materials and helps to protect our natural habitats for the future. Recycling old products into new uses less energy than making products from scratch; creates less air and waste pollution and avoids the greenhouses gases produced when waste decays in landfill sites.
Follow these easy steps to start recycling...
Recycle at home
Most households in Scotland have a kerbside recycling scheme. If you don’t have a recycling box or bag, contact your local council to request one. Storing your recycling box next to your main bin will remind you to recycle and make recycling hassle-free.
Find out what you can recycle
Different councils collect different materials, although most collect cans, glass and paper. Find out exactly what you can recycle at home using our postcode finder. For items that don’t go in your recycling box, why not take these to your local recycling centre or supermarket recycling point?
Check the dates
Find out from your local council when, and how often, recycling is collected. Mark the dates on your calendar, or request a recycling calendar from the council.
