Reducing food waste
Reducing the amount of food your school wastes is important because:
- the embedded energy from growing, transporting, storing and preparing food is also wasted
- the money spent on buying and preparing the food is wasted and costs are incurred in treating and disposing of it
- perhaps most importantly in the context of schools, children are not gaining the nutritional benefit of the wasted food.

Recycling food waste
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations require all businesses (including schools) in Scotland to take all reasonable steps to recycle as much of their waste as possible. If your school produces over 50kg of food waste per week, you must present it for collection. If you produce over 5kg of food waste per week you will need to present your food waste by 1 January 2016.
Visit Resource Efficient Scotland for more information about the waste regulations.
