Recycle at work
From January 2014 every business in Scotland will need to recycle. Zero Waste Scotland provides resources and support to help you recycle at work.
The law is changing on waste
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations effective from 1 January 2014 require every business and organisation operating in Scotland, regardless of size, to recycle plastics, metals, paper, card and glass. Food businesses (that produce, prepare or sell food) which produce over 50kg of food waste per week must present it for separate collection from 1 January 2014.
Here is a short video explaining the waste regulations due to be launched January 2014:
The regulations represent the biggest step forward in recycling that Scotland has ever seen, and we all have a role to play. By auditing their waste streams, many companies will find easy ways to reduce costs. Nationally, there are potential savings of £192 million: Scotland is paying £95 million in landfill tax and we could recover raw materials valued at £97 million that are currently being thrown away.
Resource Efficient Scotland
This is a new programme being delivered by Zero Waste Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government, to help businesses prepare for the new Regulations.
The Resource Efficient Scotland website offers a variety of user-friendly, informative resources, freely available online, to help make the transition to the new Regulations as easy and smooth as possible.
The resources include:
- video case studies which demonstrate how organisations of different sizes in a variety of sectors have put systems in place and trained staff in preparation for January
- a frequently asked questions database which provides instant answers to common questions on waste management and process
- a rural postcode finder which helps businesses determine whether they are required to separate food waste under the regulations
- a poster creator tool which enables businesses to develop clear signage for recycling bins to ensure their employees understand what and where to recycle.
Zero Waste Scotland also provides a Business Reuse and Recycling Directory to help businesses easily source waste management services, including recycling and reuse organisations, operating in their postcode.
Why not watch this short video on Mo's Convenience Store and see how they benefited from nearly £3,000 of yearly savings having implemented new ways of handing it’s recycling in preparation for the Waste (Scotland) Regulations, effective 1 January 2014.
